My mom was here this weekend and as I was dropping her off at the airport today I said: “Please come back soon. Lulu is much better behaved when you’re here.” I was only half-joking.
What is it with kids and grandparents that they are always on their best behavior when the older generation is around? Is it because they know sweets and gifts are likely just a cute smile away?
Regardless, it was nice to see the fun, loving dynamic between my oldest daughter and my mom continue to grow. They adore each other, and I can’t wait to see the relationship between Vivi and my mom develop, too.
Lulu and my mom first really bonded when my mom came out to watch her for a week while Tom and I went on a couples vacation to Ireland last year.
So the moral of this story is that you should leave your kids with the grandparents and head off to Europe…or Tahiti.
I really want to go to Tahiti with Tom. I swear, I have been to all the most romantic places in the world WITHOUT my significant other. Paris, Venice, Bora Bora, Santorini — although I did go back to Santorini with him, but only for a day in port and I’d love to go back for a longer vacation there with him.
But who know when that day may be. I’m much more nervous about leaving TWO kids with Grandma for a couple trip, as awesome of a babysitter as she may be. I feel like the temper tantrum stage needs to be over, so we’ve got a few years to go (that’s all, right???).
And what’s my dream couples vacation? The Maldives. In an overwater bungalow. OMG amazing.
Maybe for our 10-year anniversary… (wishful sigh)
Grandma Visiting Means Date Night!
We may not be jetting off anywhere sometime soon sans kids, but we did manage to sneak away for a short date night while my mom was here.
We got Lulu to bed and then I nursed Vivi and handed her off to my mom to cuddle and we snuck away for 90 minutes to the nearest wine bar. Tom was angling to stay for another half hour, but then my mom disappeared! Ok, not really 😉 but she went upstairs to rock Vivi in the rocking chair in our room and didn’t have her phone with her (as I learned later) so didn’t answer my text I sent asking if all was good. So I mildly freaked out something was wrong and felt like we needed to get home asap.
Of course everything was fine and my mom told me I was being silly once I got home and told her she nearly gave me a heart attack. Perhaps we could have stayed out later, but I think an hour and a half is pretty good for leaving Vivi with a babysitter for the first time!
Date Night Conversation
Oh, and if you’re wondering what Tom and I talked about on our first date night in a loooong time: we talked about travel of course! We still need to book our north shore accommodation for this winter’s Kauai trip so we sipped our drinks, ate some dessert, and scrolled through vacation rental pictures on his iPhone. We almost always end up trip planning on our dates – both before and after having kids.
And I love that about us. 🙂
Where is your dream couples vacation?
