The 5-Star Charles Hotel is a Private Oasis in the Heart of Munich

Charles Hotel, Munich

The instant I walked into the Charles Hotel, everything felt easy again. I’d spent the past few days navigating around the southern area of Bavaria in a car, and getting into Munich had been a bit hectic and exhausting. Walking into the Charles Hotel, which is part of the Rocco Forte Hotels group, I immediately got the feeling “aw, I don’t have to think now for a couple days” — at least while at the hotel.

And that frame of mind was because the service at the Charles Hotel was impeccable. Every time I left the hotel the doormen asked if I need any assistance with anything and were experts at giving great directions, whether via walking or metro. Upon checking in, the desk attendant led me to my room and graciously showed me around. During my stay at the hotel during my vacation in Munich, any questions I had were kindly and expertly answered by the front desk or the concierge service.

The service is what especially makes the Charles Hotel stand out in my mind, but the rooms certainly didn’t disappoint either. I stayed in a Classic King Suite and it had a long hallway, which was adjacent to a huge bathroom with a separate tub and shower and large sink area. The end of the hallway opened up into a bright airy room. The king size bed had a comfortable mattress and had a cozy white down comforter on top. A separate seating area was placed next to the balcony door.

I found the balcony quite ingenious. In cities, space is usually at a premium so balconies are often small. At the Charles Hotel, the balconies are curved out and the room also has a slight curve to it, resulting in the balcony feeling much larger than it is when the French-balcony style doors are open.

The Charles Hotel also has a relaxing indoor pool area adjacent to a steam room and sauna. The pool is part of the world-class Charles Spa at the hotel that offers relaxing treatments and other massages.

So you may be thinking, well, sure, this all sounds great, but not so much if the Charles Hotel is located on the outskirts of Munich. Therein lies the final hand in the Charles Hotel draw as a top Munich hotel – the hotel is located in an enviable spot that feel like you’re in a private oasis outside of the city due to its location next to the Old Botanical Gardens. Leave the hotel and walk through the gardens to the other side and you’re immediately in easy access to Marienplatz and the Glockenspiel (just a five to 10 minute walk) along the pretty shop-lined Neuhauser Straβe.

The cherry on top for why the Charles Hotel is a superb luxury hotel didn’t come until after I left their premises. I stayed there with my mom and checking into our hotel in Berlin that night and unpacking her suitcase again, she realized she’d left several shirts hanging up in one of the closets in the hallway. I called Charles Hotel and they said they’d check with housekeeping and get back to me. Within an hour, the head housekeeper called me and said they’d found them and would be happy to ship them to us. My mom was thrilled and I was cemented in my belief that the Charles Hotel really does go above and beyond in their service.
