Exploring Union Square During a Girl’s Weekend in San Franciso

I ditched the fiancé this weekend and flew up from San Diego to San Francisco for some girl time with one of my favorite ladies of all time; my good friend (and bridesmaid) Catherine. We ended up spending quite a bit of it at Union Square in San Francisco.

As often happens when Catherine and I are together we ended up shopping. I am a horrible shopper; I get crabby quickly and hate trying things on. I also don’t trust my fashion judgment. Trendy things just confuse me. Which is why I like shopping with Catherine. Her career is in the fashion industry and she can put me in something that I would never pick out myself and it looks amazing on.

This time around the mall was a different mission though. Instead of trying to make me fashionable, we were trying to find something that would make all my bridesmaids look stunning.

After trips to David’s Bridal and Bella Bridesmaids and perusing the Internet, I’d decided the dress of my vision did not exist and was about to give up and just make my bridesmaids wear board shorts and bikini tops (I’m getting married on the beach).

Catherine, however, was not to be deterred.

She thought the answer lied in the shopping mecca of San Francisco: Shopping in Union Square.

I’ve spent many a trip exploring San Francisco, but Union Square had never really been on my radar. And even for a shopping slacker such as myself I couldn’t help but feel a bit impressed by Union Square’s retail therapy offerings while walking around it with Catherine.

Union Square is a jigsaw of famous brand names, all converging along San Francisco’s hilly streets like Tetris pieces. A couple courtyards clustered with locals and tourists break up the puzzle. Cafes and restaurants are also prevalent, beckoning a break from all the shopping. From J.Crew to Louis Vuitton, there is no shortage of clothing and accessories in every budget covering the blocks of Union Square.

After hitting the department stores in Union Square (Bloomingdale’s, Barneys, Macy’s, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Sak’s) into Westfield Mall and shopped ’til we dropped – onto a comfy booth. We had to take a break at the Nordstrom’s Café after Catherine commented that I needed a glass of wine. Shopping stresses me out apparently. In addition to Nordstrom’s Café, there are plenty of other eating options. I was surprised by how massive the food court was and that it had a lot more than the typical mall food court – crepes, sushi, and even a Bristol Farms market.

Union Square is Worth a Visit

Despite the plethora of shops, we did not find the ideal bridesmaid dress. I did find a pretty awesome dress for the dress rehearsal though – thanks to Catherine’s keen eye, making the entire shopping excursion to Union Square worth it.
